Abstract

Taiwan, historically called ‘Formosa’, is an island in East Asia. It is surrounded by the East China Sea, Philippine Sea, South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait. The latter separates it from Mainland China geographically. Taiwan possesses a few striking characteristics. Economically, Taiwan is highly developed in maritime trade, the origin of which can be traced back to long before the Dutch colonial period in the1600s.
